8 Apps That Turn Your Real Day Into a Game
Habitica turns tasks into an RPG and Pikmin Bloom plays on your walks. For photos, Pictonico! makes minigames and Downpour lets you build your own.
You took a pile of photos this week and looked at almost none of them twice. The latte with the heart in the foam, the dog waiting outside a shop, the sky you stopped for on the way home. They deserve better than a camera roll.
An app that turns your day into a game usually plays with one part of it. Habitica makes your to-do list an RPG, Pikmin Bloom plays on your walks and Pokémon Sleep on your nights. For photos, Pictonico! makes minigames and Downpour lets you build one. We make MirrorMii, which fits the photo lane: small quests answered with a snap.
- Habitica is best for a to-do list that needs a party and a foe.
- Pikmin Bloom is best for a walk that's already the best part of your day.
- Zombies, Run! is best for runs you'd rather spend escaping zombies.
- Pictonico! is best for laughing at the photos already on your phone.

What makes an app turn your day into a game?
An app turns your day into a game when something you'd do anyway becomes the move, and the game around it gives you real choices and something to get better at.
There's research behind that. In a 2006 paper in Motivation and Emotion, Richard Ryan, Scott Rigby and Andrew Przybylski reported four studies that linked players' enjoyment of video games to feeling capable and free to choose. Their survey of online multiplayer players also linked it to feeling connected to other people.
It's a finding about video games, not about these apps, but it makes a good test. Choose by the part of your day you want to play with, the game wrapped around it, what it asks you to do and what it costs.
In our October 2026 check, we asked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Bing Copilot Search whether any app turns photos of your day into a game. Their answers named different apps, and no cited page appeared in two answers. The chart records that single-question snapshot; it is not a ranking of the apps.
Prices checked October 29, 2026, on each app's US App Store listing.

Which apps turn your to-do list and check-ins into a game?
Habitica turns your to-do list into a role-playing game, and Finch turns short self-care exercises into a pet you raise. Both still ask you to tap in what you did; the game is the reward that follows.

Habitica
Every task you check off pays out in gold, experience and items, and there's a deep pile of gear and pets to collect. Join a party with friends and you battle foes together by getting your tasks done, while seasonal events keep the world from going stale.
You still write every task and tick it off yourself. The RPG is the reward for that bookkeeping, and it never does the bookkeeping for you.
It's free to play, with optional gem purchases and subscriptions.
Finch
Start the morning with a quick mood check and your bird heads off exploring. By evening it's back from its adventure with a story to share.
If you came for a game, though, the game part is light. Around the pet sit goal tracking, journaling prompts and breathing exercises, so most of your time goes to the check-ins.
The download is free, and Finch Plus is sold as an in-app purchase. For more trackers built like games, see our comparison of games like Habitica.
Which apps turn your walks, runs, sleep and brushing into a game?
Pikmin Bloom turns your walks into a game, Zombies, Run! does the same for runs, and two Pokémon apps take on sleep and brushing. Here the thing you already do is the move, so there's far less to type in.

Pikmin Bloom
You plant a trail of flowers wherever you walk, and the map fills with blossoms from you and other players nearby. Along the way you collect Decor Pikmin, and some of them wear fishing lures or hamburger buns.
It leans hard on location. The listing recommends a network connection for accurate location, warns that background GPS can drain your battery, and says the game is built for phones, not tablets.
It's free to play, with coins and storage upgrades sold separately.
Zombies, Run!
You're Runner 5, and the story plays through your headphones between songs from your own playlists. Jog, walk a trail, use a treadmill or work out in a wheelchair, and every session becomes a mission to rescue survivors and gather supplies. Between missions you rebuild Abel Township from a handful of survivors into a fortified town.
The story is the hook, and most of it sits behind the paywall. It's free to start, but the full mission catalogue needs a subscription.
Pokémon Sleep
You put your phone by your pillow and go to sleep. By morning, Pokémon with the same sleep type as you have gathered, and you study their sleep styles to fill your Sleep Style Dex. During the day, Pokémon you befriend bring Berries to help raise Snorlax.
The ask is the nightly setup. Your phone goes beside your pillow every night, though certain smartwatches can supply sleep data instead.
It's free to download, with a Premium Pass and diamonds for sale.
Pokémon Smile
Brushing your teeth fights the bacteria that have captured Pokémon in your mouth, and a good brush lets you catch the Pokémon you save. The game can snap a few photos mid-brush, and afterwards you decorate your favourite with stickers.
It's made for the bathroom and for families. Sessions run one, two or three minutes, there are up to three profiles, a grown-up should sit beside any child who plays, and it needs an internet connection.
It's free, with no in-app purchases shown on the App Store.
Is there an app that turns photos of your day into a game?
Yes, two very different ones. Pictonico! turns photos you already have, or ones you take on the spot, into minigames. Downpour hands you the tools to arrange photos, drawings and text into a branching story.
Pictonico!
Your boss is hungry and needs your help, or two old friends reconnect while skydiving. Nintendo's game drops your photos into silly minigames like these. Grab friends for a fresh photo and you can play straight away, and your photos aren't sent to Nintendo.
The free part is only a demo of some minigames. To play properly you buy a volume, and the volumes hold up to 80 minigames between them.
Downpour
Downpour's pitch is that you can make a game before your tea goes cold. You arrange photos, drawings and text into pages, connect the choices, and anyone can play the result in a web browser.
You're the designer here, so nothing happens until you build the pages and wire up the choices yourself.
The app is free; an optional Plus subscription adds outbound links and more uploads. If you'd like a daily photo habit with no game attached, our photo a day challenge guide covers that instead.
What does MirrorMii do with your photos?
MirrorMii is a game you play with moments from your real day. Snap something for a quest, collect outfits and decor, and see what Miia does next.
Photo Hunt is the game's camera for moments from your day, and a meal is one of the things you can photograph. The game checks each photo, and what it becomes, a fragment, waits until you hand it to Genii, the small glass slime who hosts the game.
The Bank, the game's store of everything you've found, holds your fragments until you choose to spend them. What you find becomes outfits and decor for Miia, and once you have an item, you decide whether to use it.
After that, the story is hers. Follow the residents' posts, read Miia's diary and see what happens in her world. Choosing an outfit gives you a part in it; her next move is her own.
