Tomodachi Life Personalities: All 16 Types, Explained
For anyone who built their best friend slider by slider and is now wondering why she won't leave the house.
You made your best friend first. Same eyebrows, same laugh in her voice, and on the sliders you were honest about her: slow in the mornings, polite to strangers, feelings mostly kept inside. Now she's moping at home while your loud cousin already seems to know everyone on the island.
In Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, four sliders set each resident's personality: Movement, Speech, Energy and Thinking. Together they sort every islander into one of 16 types, in four groups of four. The type changes how they act and react, which clothes and rooms they love, and who they tend to get along with.
We make MirrorMii, a game where the character you set up lives her own life, so an island that ignores your plans is our favorite kind of story.

What are all 16 Tomodachi Life personalities?
One warning first if you played the 3DS game in the US: the names got shuffled. The friendly Charmer you remember is now called Merrymaker, and today's Charmer is the stylish type the 3DS called Trendsetter. Old guides won't tell you that.
In the US the four groups are Considerate, Reserved, Outgoing and Ambitious. The UK and Europe say Easy-going, Reserved, Energetic and Confident, and the islanders behave the same either way. Each type has its own color, which shows up in their starting outfit and their house.
| Type (US) | UK and Europe | Group (US) | Living with them |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sweetie | Softie | Considerate | Sensitive and sentimental, tuned in to how others feel |
| Cheerleader | Optimist | Considerate | Smiles for themselves and to help others smile |
| Buddy | Carer | Considerate | Puts friends first and works to keep everyone getting along |
| Daydreamer | Dreamer | Considerate | Head in the clouds, where the good ideas live |
| Strategist | Patient | Reserved | Laid-back and inventive, does things their own way |
| Perfectionist | Perfectionist | Reserved | Happiest mid-project, sees beauty everywhere |
| Observer | Introvert | Reserved | Quiet face, a lot going on underneath |
| Thinker | Thinker | Reserved | Thinks things through from every angle |
| Charmer | Charmer | Outgoing | Effortlessly stylish, settles into anything new |
| Go-Getter | Adventurer | Outgoing | Witty and bold, never a dull moment nearby |
| Merrymaker | Bubbly | Outgoing | Makes friends easily and finds the bright side |
| Dynamo | Hot-Blooded | Outgoing | Trusts their gut and easily earns respect |
| Achiever | Busy Bee | Ambitious | Makes the plan, then actually does it |
| Visionary | Leader | Ambitious | Acts on a whim and won't stop once started |
| Rogue | Individualist | Ambitious | Knows a lot about a lot, and answers with confidence |
| Maverick | Headstrong | Ambitious | Cuts their own path, fast |
Groups show most when feelings run high. An angry Outgoing or Ambitious islander stomps around, while Considerate and Reserved ones keep their usual pace. On a sad day, everyone except the Reserved crowd shuffles along leaning forward.
Did the personalities change from the 3DS game?
Underneath, barely. Living the Dream keeps the 3DS system of 16 types in four groups, with two sliders renamed: Expressiveness is now Energy, and Attitude is now Thinking.
The names moved a lot more. In the US, 14 of the 16 types were renamed, and two old names now belong to someone else.
Charmer isn't the only name that moved. Go-Getter switched groups, too: the old Confident self-starter is Maverick now, and Go-Getter is the witty Outgoing type that used to be Entertainer.
So if a 3DS-era guide says Charmers make friends easily, translate before you trust it. UK and European players kept 11 of their 16 names.
How do you get the personality you want?
Only four sliders decide the type: Movement (slow to quick), Speech (polite to honest, or direct in the UK), Energy (flat to varied) and Thinking (serious to chill). The fifth, Overall, runs from normal to quirky and never changes the type. Go wild with it.
Pick your target from the chart and set the sliders the way its description feels. Then move one slider at a time and check the resulting type after each move, so you can see which one tipped it.
Missed? You can change it any time.
Which Tomodachi Life personalities get along?
Nintendo keeps this loose on purpose. Its developers have said forced relationships would kill the surprise, so islanders become best friends, move in together, fight and hold grudges on their own schedule.
Fan guides describe similar personalities as more likely to get along, with more friction between types that sit far apart on the chart. Those guides describe an Observer as likely to befriend other Reserved islanders quickly, and less likely to get along with a Charmer or Go-Getter.
Opposites still become friends, develop crushes and marry, and same-group islanders still argue. Comfort follows personality, too: an Achiever can cheer up a sad Perfectionist with ease, and a Dynamo has a harder time.
The fun of a character with a mind of her own
The best island moments are the ones you didn't plan, like the shy friend you built suddenly doing something bold. MirrorMii is a game built on that feeling.
Miia is your digital twin, a reflection of you who lives her own life on the far side of the mirror. You pick her outfit, and what she does in it is up to her. She keeps a diary you can read but never rewrite, and she has her own friends and her own drama.

FAQ
Are Tomodachi Life personalities based on MBTI?
Nintendo's pages for the game don't make that connection. Having 16 types invites the comparison with Myers-Briggs, but it doesn't mean the game uses it. MBTI sorts people by preferences like introversion or extraversion; the game sets how a character moves, talks, emotes and takes life. For the real tests, see which personality test is most accurate.
Can you change an islander's personality later?
Yes, whenever you like. Open the Residents tab in the menu, pick the islander and adjust their personality sliders. Only Movement, Speech, Energy and Thinking decide the type, so you can play with Overall freely without changing who they are.
What Tomodachi Life personality would I be?
Make yourself and set the sliders honestly: how fast you move, how bluntly you talk, how much energy you show, how seriously you take things. If the result feels off, hand the controller to a friend and let them set you. Their version is usually funnier.
