Habitica vs Finch: Which One Will You Keep Opening?

MirrorMii

Choose how you want your tasks to feel, before you choose the character carrying them.

You've written the same walk into two apps. In one, it's a Daily on your hero's task list. In the other, it's a small goal beside a bird. Now you're wondering which version of that walk you'll want to keep tapping.

That's the whole Habitica vs Finch question. Habitica turns your to-do list into an old-school RPG with teeth, so skipped Dailies hurt your hero. Finch gives you a small bird that sets off on adventures when you tick off gentle goals. If a little risk gets you moving, pick Habitica. If guilt makes you delete apps, pick Finch.

We make MirrorMii, a cozy game for people who want their ordinary day to become something to play with. We read this choice through the work each app asks of you. Our section below describes its unreleased next version, 2.0.

What do you actually do each day?

In Habitica, anything can become a task, from flossing to finally calling the dentist. Habits get a tap whenever they happen, Dailies run on a schedule, and To Do's disappear once you clear them. Every tick pays out gold and experience, and your little hero levels up. Hit level 10 and you pick a class, and suddenly you're thinking about gear.

Finch starts with smaller goal check-ins. You set a few small goals, things like taking a walk or drinking water, and each one you tap gives your bird energy. Once it's full, it heads off on an adventure and comes home with a short story to tell you. Guided breathing and a journal sit nearby for slower evenings.

If you've ever lost a whole evening planning a character's gear, Habitica will feel like home. If you'd rather spend ten minutes choosing an outfit for a bird, that's Finch.

What happens when you skip a day?

Habitica fights back. Each Daily you miss costs your hero some health, and if you run out, the game takes a level, all your gold and a piece of your gear. You can buy the gear back.

The sting is the point. If you like a bit of pressure, it works as a push, and our guide to a missed day in Habitica walks through the recovery when it doesn't.

Finch is gentler. It counts the days you open the app, and just checking in is enough.

Miss one and you can repair the count with Rainbow Stones you've earned, or with a free repair the app hands you every third adventure.

Going away for a week? Turn on Pause Damage in Habitica's settings first, and warn your party if you're mid boss fight, because their missed Dailies can still hit you. Finch's Pause Mode freezes your count for as many days as you choose.

A missed day matters less than it feels. In a study published in 2009, Phillippa Lally and her team at University College London followed nearly a hundred people building a new daily habit, and a single missed day barely dented their progress. So one bad Tuesday doesn't undo a month.

Finch's repairs look a lot like an idea Marissa Sharif and Suzanne Shu tested at UCLA. In their 2017 paper on emergency reserves, people who had a hard goal plus a few skip days they could spend if they had to kept going longer than people with no slack at all. They mostly tried not to use the skips. That research didn't test Finch, so the resemblance is a design analogy. It doesn't establish an outcome for its users.

Want stakes that make you get up and do the thing? That's Habitica. Want a soft place to land after a rough week? That's Finch.

Who's in it with you?

A Habitica party holds up to 30 players, and you take on bosses together by doing your real tasks. With the right friends it's brilliant accountability. With the wrong ones, you're the reason everyone lost health on Thursday.

Don't download it for the Guilds, though. Habitica closed them in 2023, even if the store page hasn't caught up.

Finch keeps it small. You add friends by code, send them free Good Vibes and see how they're getting on. Goal Buddies lets you and one friend take on the same daily goal, a quiet pact that nobody else needs to see.

If your group chat already nags each other about the gym, that's a Habitica party waiting to happen. If you'd rather have one friend who can see you drank your water today, that's Finch.

What does each one cost?

Both work properly for free. Everything in Habitica is playable without paying, and Finch keeps its core self-care features free. Each sells an optional subscription, and over a year Habitica's is the cheaper one.

Trying Finch Plus? Set a reminder. The 7-day free trial turns into a paid subscription unless you cancel.

| App | A missed day | Friends | Optional subscription | |-|-|-|-| | Habitica | Your hero loses health; at zero, a level, your gold and some gear | Parties of up to 30 | $4.99 a month to $47.99 a year | | Finch | Your day count breaks; stones or a free repair fix it | Friends by code, Goal Buddies | $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year |

You can use each app's free core without starting a paid trial. Keep that separate from the optional subscriptions, especially when a trial asks you to agree to renewal.

Where does MirrorMii fit if you're tired of both?

If maintaining a list has become the work you keep avoiding, that is a different decision from choosing how the list reacts. MirrorMii is a cozy game, and its next version, 2.0, is not out yet.

Miia considers two outfits on a quiet evening with Genii beside her

In 2.0, Genii, the fairy-godmother host of the island, posts quests. You use Photo Hunt to snap something from your real day and hand what you find to her yourself. Once you finish a quest, it stays finished. Your unspent fragments stay in the Bank while you're away. A week without photos takes nothing from that balance.

In 2.0, what you find becomes outfits and decor for Miia, your digital twin, a reflection of you who lives her own life. You pick her outfit. What she does in it is up to her. That is the part to come back and see.

FAQ

Can you use Habitica and Finch at the same time?

You can, and since both are free it costs nothing to try. Habitica suits the chores and work tasks, and Finch suits the small, gentle ones like water and a walk. Keep the Finch list short, though, or it'll start to feel like a second to-do list.

Can you move your tasks from Habitica to Finch?

Not directly. Habitica's website exports your task data from the Site Data tab in Settings. Finch goals are ones you add yourself, so bring over only the few that still matter, and start them small.

What happens to your Finch bird if you delete the app?

If you never made a Finch Account, your bird and your progress live only on your phone. Make a backup from the Your Data section before you delete anything. If you're leaving the bird for good, our list of apps like Finch covers the wider field.
